Harts Services to Host DIY Plumbing Workshop on Aug. 23

Harts Services, a Tacoma-based plumbing company, helped build a Habitat for Humanity project on Saturday, July 21. Harts Services employees built a playground for community children to play on in the Tillicum neighborhood. The crew of plumbers, office workers, underground experts and ownerships worked together to dig and set a foundation, pour cement for supports and build the stone surround.

The crew worked from 8:45 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the project overseen by the Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity Chapter. Habitat for Humanity is building several homes in the community, and Harts Services spent the day building a playground for the children who will occupy the neighborhoods’ homes.

“This was really special to our team because we got to use our expertise to help give back to the community,” Harts Services co-owner Rich Hart said. “It was great to get our crew together to hopefully help some people make a better life for themselves.”

Harts Services Shares Tips on How to Prep Your Tacoma Home for Vacation

“When you’re away from your home for more than a couple of days, such as on a summer vacation, there are some precautions you should take to make sure you don’t come home to a plumbing disaster,” said Rich Hart, co-owner of Harts Services. “The last thing any homeowner wants is to come home from a relaxing trip to extensive water damage, high utility bills and thousands of dollars of needed repairs.”

Hart is offering the following tips to prepare a home prior to leaving for a trip to the beach, mountains, amusement park or other destination:

 – There is no need to heat water in an empty home. A lot of homeowners don’t realize their water heater may have a vacation mode for this very purpose. Prior to leaving, adjust the water heater to vacation mode. If the water heater does not have a vacation mode, turn the temperature down. This will save a significant amount of money on utility bills.

Turn off the water while you’re away –

 The last thing you want is to come home to a high bill due to a leak, or worse, flooding. If there’s an emergency water shutoff valve in a convenient location, that can be used to turn off the water supply. If not, special tools can be inexpensively purchased and used to shut the water off at the water meter, usually in the yard close to the road. The last thing anyone needs is a water pipe leaking dozens or hundreds of gallons of water every day while they’re away.

 Garbage disposals can be a great tool for cleaning up. They can also store nasty odors and bits of food that attract pests. Homemade remedies to flush this out can include warm water, vinegar and/or baking soda. Flushing the garbage disposal before departure means no smelly surprises are waiting for your return.

 – Water left inactive in the toilet can produce a foul odor and a difficult to remove ring that forms around the toilet bowl. To prevent this, place ½ cup of bleach in the toilet bowl just before leaving home.
